New Torquay Skierg World Record Holder

New Torquay Skierg World Record Holder

Published - 26th Nov

Ever had the feeling you are putting in a lot of effort but getting nowhere? Well 74 year old Lifestyle Member Phil Wood has perfected this art and achieved a world record in the process.

How? Skierg, which is a fitness station based on the physical movements required to ski. Phil Wood has recorded the quickest time of 4 minutes and 2 seconds to ‘ski’ 1000m and 1 minute and 55 seconds to ‘ski’ 500m in the men’s 70-79 age category.

Phil has been a member of Lifestyle Health & Fitness Suite located in the Riviera International Centre for 14 years and he works out around 3 times a week. His preferred machines include the Concept 2 Rower and Skierg machine and he has been entering his completion times online for different set distances for some years.  The online record system allows anyone who has used the Concept 2 machines to enter their completion times and it wasn’t until Phil recently checked the world record leader’s board that he discovered his name appeared.

“I have been skiing for over 45 years and I used to be a PE Teacher so this has naturally helped to build stamina and strength,” said Phil.

“Skierg makes the sport of Nordic skiing available to everyone, said Colin Pemberton, Lifestyle Health & Fitness Suite Manager. “It builds strength and endurance by working the entire body with the poling motion integral to all techniques of Nordic skiing. Each pull engages the arms, shoulders, core and legs in a downward “crunch”, using body weight to help accelerate the handles.

There are 2 Skierg machines at Lifestyle Health & Fitness Suite which are amongst 57 different fitness stations.”
