A Taste of Oz

A Taste of Oz

Published - 22nd Oct

To combat the winter blues, if only for one night in November, a Torquay Restaurant will be casting an impromptu ray of sunshine with an Australian themed evening.

"If you fancy trying something out of the ordinary then you will love this theme night as you will be able to taste Australian delicacies such as ostrich, kangaroo and barramundi without having to travel half way around the world," said Naomi Morris, Bay Brasserie Supervisor.

The Australian theme night will take place at the Bay Brasserie on Friday 19th November as part of their monthly 'Around the World Club.' The menu has been designed to reflect the strong draw of the Nation's cuisine on its own bountiful resources which has deviated a long way since Australia’s first settlers brought with them the tastes of 18th century Great Britain. Dishes include; Ayres rock ostrich strips with cashew nut & pineapple salad, baked barramundi with prawn butter and a borlotti bean salad, and char grilled kangaroo steak set on a wild herb mash, with a creamy mustard sauce.

Sous Chef Nick Wanostrocht who has recently visited Australia said "I was impressed with the emphasis that Australian cuisine placed on using fresh, wholesome ingredients. I was also swept away by the simplicity of the dishes which were still brimming full of tantalising flavours. I am now very excited to be recreating these dishes for our theme night." To ensure that the menu, created especially for this event, was a true representation of authentic Australian cuisine, not only was considerable time spent on researching into recipes, the final menu was also emailed to a catering contact living in Australia for approval.

But Australian cuisine isn't just about the food, it's about the culture and the lifestyle and this is what the Bay Brasserie is hoping to capture.

"From cocktails to Beach Boys tracks, palm trees to beach balls, this theme night aims to create a relaxed, feel good vibe where you can sit back and enjoy good music, good food and good company. And at just £15 for 3 courses it's also great value for money," said Naomi.
