Who'll follow Glenys?

20.01.10

TIME is running out to get your nominations in for the Europlas Torbay Sports Personality Awards 2010.

The deadline for nominations in the nine categories — to recognise the region's athletes, coaches, volunteers and clubs — is little more than a month away.

The winners will be honoured at a special gala night to be held at the Torquay Riviera International Conference Centre on May 14.

The annual awards reward sports people from across Torbay for their hard work, dedication and sporting accolades.

The awards also include categories for coaches and volunteers, whose commitment and dedication have been instrumental in helping many sports people take part in physical activity, and opening up opportunities within sport.

The Torbay Sports Personality Awards 2010 are again being sponsored by Europlas, along with the Herald Express, Excell Photography, Torbay Sport Partnership, Pyramid Torbay Photography, the Riviera International Conference Centre and ESW.

Last year's Europlas Torbay Sports Personality of the Year award went to Glenys Haywood, of Torbay Tornados Netball Club.

If you know someone who you feel is worthy of succeeding Glenys, get your nominations in for any of the nine categories.

These include Senior Sportsperson of the Year; Junior Sportsperson of the Year; Sportsperson of the Year with a Physical/Learning Disability; Junior Volunteer of the Year; Senior Volunteer of the Year; Coach of the Year; Senior Team of the Year; Junior Team of the Year; and Sports Development Torbay Community Club of the Year.

All nominees must reside or be in full-time education within the district of Torbay and, to be eligible for junior awards, individuals must be under 18 on March 31, 2010.

The awards will once again be hosted by Palm FM's John Hogarth.

Last year's event was a huge success with 17 individuals, five sports teams and two community clubs all receiving awards presented by Olympic sailing silver medallist Joe Glanfield.

A sports auction also raised nearly £800. Half of this money will go towards the Rowcroft Hospice charity, while the other half will go back into sport in Torbay.

Nomination forms are now available from www.thisissouthdevon.co.uk, www.torbaysport.com and also from www.torbay.gov.uk.

Alternatively, call Torbay Sports Partnership for more details on 01803 403747. The closing date for nominations is March 5.
