Council sends open invite to Torbay's sports clubs

27.01.10

CLUBS and groups within the Torbay area are invited to attend the annual meeting of the Torbay Sports Council on March 25 at the Torquay Riviera International Centre.

It costs teams just £3 per year to join the Sports Council, which in return offers help and support in club administration and various other fields.

Council spokesman Simon Ward said: "We are here to work and support the local community and its many sports clubs, whether you are part of a popular sport like football or a less popular sport like judo or chess.

"We have a dedicated committee who all have a great deal of knowledge and experience within local sports groups or professional sporting bodies like Sport England and Active Devon.

"We would like to see more local groups come forward and meet the council.

"We may at one point be able to help you in the future."

It is hoped Active Devon will hold a talk at the meeting about child protection rules within sports clubs and how the latest Government rules affect your clubs.

A Torbay Council representative is also expected to deliver a presentation on the council's vision for sport in Torbay.

Mr Ward added: "We would also welcome any suggestions from clubs on ideas which they may like to hear about regarding their clubs and their future development.

"We also hope to arrange a special 'come and promote your club' night at the AGM.

"This is open to any clubs who would like the chance to advertise for free to possible new members and local sports networks."

The Torbay Sports Council works very closely with Torbay Council, Torbay Sports Partnership and the Community Sports Network to name a few.

It also works on ideas to help and promote better sporting participation and health within Torbay, including the Green Mile campaign at Paignton which is nearing completion.

The Green Mile encourages local residents young and old to walk or run the golden mile around Paignton Sea Front, with sponsored posts being put up to show distances covered.

The council has also recently worked with Torbay Council to buy solid outdoor table tennis tables to be put in outdoor parks.

And it was the driving force behind last summer's Torbay Schools' Bowls League.

Four school teams took to the greens in 2009 and, due to its success, that number has trebled for 2010.

The council is also looking to help local disabled sports groups this year.

To join, write to Sheila Thomas at 22 Charmouth Close, Torquay, TQ1 3UD.
