Over 80 delegates who all share an interest and passion for Devon’s coastline and seas gathered at Torquay’s Riviera International Conference Centre to help manage the rich and diverse resources of the county’s maritime environment for the benefit of all life.
The one day seminar for Government officials, local councils, fishermen and seaside tourist attractions was organised by the Devon Maritime Forum which was formed by Devon County Council back in October 2004.
The seminar was organised by Aidan Winder, Devon County Council’s Coastal Officer who explained the Forum brought together those with a common vision for the coasts and seas around the county.
“Our coasts and seas are of immense value and it is the responsibility of us all to ensure their continued health, diversity and well being so they are there in the future for us all to share and see. Sadly, today, there are serious concerns for the health of the maritime environment, particularly offshore and its ability to provide for us in the future.”
The main focus of the seminar revolved around the Marine Bill and speakers included the Forum’s Chairman, Professor Laurence Mee, Devon County Council’s Emergency Planning Officer Simon Wilken; the council’s Development Trust Officer Kevin Mowatt; the head of DEFRA’s Maritime Legislation Division, Dave Bench and County Councillor Margaret Rogers.
In expressing thanks to those who had given their time and efforts into organising the seminar, Professor Mee highlighted the success of the Riviera International Centre as a venue and praised the staff – including conference and events co-ordinator Rachel Perry - for their outstanding work.
