Torquay’s
Riviera International Centre has been overwhelmed by the success of
the local initiative to promote health and fitness called ‘Fitbay’.
The scheme involves general practioners referring patients to the Centre’s
Lifestyle Health and Fitness Suite to benefit from one to one support
and help them on a journey to a fitter and healthier lifestyle.
So far 48 patients have been referred to the Centre by doctors under
the GP Referral Scheme and 15 have successfully completed the course.
An impressive 98% of clients have successfully had their blood pressure
reduced since joining the scheme and many have committed to remaining
physically active.
Currently only two exercise professionals at the Riviera International
Centre – Darren Carter and Rachel Barnett are qualified to run
the scheme but more instructors are set to enrol and qualify to keep
up with the demand.
Rachel explained: “The GP referral scheme is working really well.
Darren and I make sure the experience is enjoyable and above all rewarding
for everyone who has been referred. I have even started a ‘Cardio
Cycling’ class dedicated just to them”
She added that the benefits of the cardio cycling sessions include
decreasing body fat, weight loss, shaping and toning, stress relief
and improving aerobic fitness. The low impact exercises offer a great
deal of fun.
Cardio Cycling is a brand new motivating group cycle class, using the
famous stationary LeMond Revmaster bikes at Lifestyle Health & Fitness
Suite. Rachel runs her dedicated GP Referral class twice a week, but
there are classes available at other times for anyone who would like
to take advantage of this motivational group exercise.
