One
hundred years of Rotary are being celebrated in Torquay this year
with six conferences being held at the Riviera International Conference
Centre, attracting more than 5000 Rotarians.
It’s the Conference Centre’s biggest yearly gathering of
Rotarians so far and is expected to boost the local economy by some £2.5million.
Traditionally District Conferences are held over the weekend – from
Friday to Sunday. The first event at The Riviera International Centre
took place in February and the last event in October. Many are arranging
additional special events to coincide with the Rotary International
Centenary celebrations, or doing something a bit different to mark the
occasion.
The six conferences this year will involve a huge amount of organisation
and planning for the conference staff at the Riviera International Centre
but it’s a challenge they enjoy and are proud to fulfil.
Conference Bureau Manager Nicky Harding explained: “Rotary Conferences
tend to move around the country so there is a great deal of competition
in attracting these conferences to Torquay. Securing so many this year
is therefore a major achievement for us”.
“We are extremely pleased that so many have been here before
and have been so delighted with Torquay and the Centre, that they are
returning and spreading the word.”
Conference Torquay, responsible for securing the events on behalf of
the Bay and the Centre, will be handling all the accommodation bookings
for all the delegates attending.
