A
Torbay couple who witnessed the Tsunami disaster were so touched by
the overwhelming help offered by so many people that they are to organise
their own fundraising event for the tragic victims.
Karen and Chris Stephenson were on their annual holiday on Komandoo
when the tidal wave struck last December. Fortunately, only limited
damage was caused to their wave breakers but they soon discovered the
story was very different elsewhere.
News of the devastation quickly spread and the Stephensons,
along with many other guests at their island resort, donated $800 and
the contents of their suitcases before preparing for evacuation
But it was the generosity of the gardening and maintenance staff, many
of whom worked seven days a week for little money, that caught their
attention. Karen and Chris were deeply moved as they watched many of
them give away half their belongings to the local Maldivian islands
that had lost their homes and possessions.
In fact, they were so touched they decided they had to do something
themselves and have organised their own fundraising event at the Riviera
International Centre in Torquay on April 9th
They have set up an official charity – The Maldivian Islands
Appeal – and have promised that all the proceeds from the event
will go to Maafaru which was the island that was closest to them.
The couple have organised tickets, posters and the entertainment and
used all their business contacts and suppliers to create prizes for
a raffle, including a holiday on the very island they visit every year.
“We’re asking people to remember that whole families have
been swept away by this disaster. Every little bit will help so we’d
like everyone to come and join us on the evening to help this appeal,” explained
Chris and Karen.
The event has already won the support of the Chamber of Trade and Commerce
whose former chairman, Gordon Oliver said: “We fully support any
activity in South Devon that will help the families of the Tsunami disaster.”
Gordon is currently the chairman of Tor Bay Maritime Ltd which
is also involved in raising funds to the tune of £25,000 for the
Maritime Festival that will take place in the bay this spring.
The entertainment on the evening, which is sponsored by local company
Exjet, will include two bands, Torbay’s Freeway and Air Guitar
from the West Midlands. Gemini Radio DJ Chris Edgecombe will also be
playing on the evening.
“It’s a fantastic way to raise awareness locally,” the
DJ explained.“It would be so easy to forget that the devastation
is still affecting families out there, today. I’m happy to be
part of this.”
Tickets for the evening are £12.50 and can be bought from the
Riviera International Centre on (01803) 206333.
