Group Swimming Lessons
Group swimming lessons for all abilities
At Waves Leisure Pool we pride ourselves on delivering group lessons that engage childrens interest, boost their confidence and develop their techniques through play.
Beginner lessons consist of no more than 6 per class and are co-odinated by fully qualified swimming teachers.
We have group lessons suitable for young beginners through to those wanting to improve their stroke technique. Children can begin lessons from 4 months old at our Aqua Babies classes and progress through the stages, or children can join at any stage and will be placed in an appropriate class according to their age or ability.
Beginners
Our group lessons start with a foundation programme designed to develop beginners' confidence in the water. This begins with our Newts and Puffins classes that provide an introduction to water and focus on the development of very basic swimming skills through fun and games. Upon completion of these classes children will receive a certificate from the ASA Duckling Awards.
Newts (2 – 3 years):
Wednesdays 10.30am – 11.00am
Our Newts class works to introduce and develop childrens' water confidence. Most of the lesson is carried out in the main pool and the children are encouraged to become less dependent on their parent / guardian (who will need to accompany them in the water) and try more activities with the teacher as a group.
Puffins (3 to 4 years):
These classes take place on various days and times depending on demand (for more information call 01803 206 309).
This class is suitable for non-swimmers who are dependent upon buoyancy aids.
The aim of this class is to develop childrens' confidence and encourage them to become more at ease in the water as well as develop basic propulsion skills through the water on their front and back.
The next phase...
The next phase is fundamental movement skills that range from stage 1 through to 7 which follow the National Plan for Teaching Swimming. Upon completion of each stage children will receive a certificate from the ASA Alpha Awards.
Stage l (4 years +)
This stage will develop childrens' basic safety awareness, movement skills and water confidence skills. Swimmers may use aids, e.g. armbands, floats, e.g. armband, floats etc.
Stage 2 (4 years +)
This stage will develop childrens' safe entry into the water, including jumping in and also basic floating. Swimmers will develop their swimming technique to travel on their front and back up to a distance of 5 metres, plus rotation to gain upright positions. Swimmers may use aids, e.g. armbands, floats etc.
Stage 3
This stage will develop childrens' safe entries including submersion under the water. They will develop their swimming technique to travel up to 10 metres on their front and back, and progress their rotation skills and water safety knowledge. At this stage the swimmer will be assessed without the use of aids or support.
Stage 4
This stage will develop childrens' understanding of buoyancy through developing a range of skills and refining their kicking technique for all strokes.
Stage 5
This stage will develop childrens' developing ‘watermanship’ through sculling and treading water skills. Children will develop skills to achieve complete rotation and perform all strokes for a distance of 10 metres to the given standard as provided by the ASA within the NPTS resources.
Stage 6
This stage will develop childrens' effective swimming skills including coordinated breathing across all strokes. Children will develop their swimming skills to travel up to 25 metres using a stroke of the child's choice and develop their water safety aspects and understanding of preparation for exercise.
Stage 7
This stage will develop childrens' stroke technique to travel up to 100 metres, incorporating skills learnt and combining them to develop a linked routine. Finally children will participate in an obstacle course that will require a variety of skills accomplished throughout stages 1 – 7.
