Management Changes
Well-managed
The Building has always been managed as a private Company. From 1987 to 2002 the business was run by a company with issued share capital wholly owned by the council and then leased on a term of 17 years from April 1, 2002. The lease has
seven years remaining.
Initially the Centre was managed by Bob Tolley and when he left by Bob Sweet the Councils Arts and Entertainment's Director. He was followed by John Longbottom and Tim Husbands. The Centre was managed by Gardner Merchant under contract from 1993 to 1996 with Mike McCarthy as manager. Barry Cole became the Managing Director in January 1997 retiring in March 2012. A new General Manager is to be appointed in the near future.
The main source of income is the payments received from users of the Centre – on average £2.5m per year. The council provides funding in the form of a support grant in order to secure the benefit to Torbay’s economy and to subsidise the cost of running the public leisure pool. The grant also helps to support a wide range of valuable community activities at the Centre.
